Selected as one of the top three submissions (one overall winner and two runners-up) for the inaugural UK Biobank Scientific Impact Awards, and invited to present at the internationally attended UK Biobank Scientific Conference, based on the strength of the research’s scientific impact.

“For deep, fundamental, and wide-ranging contributions to mathematical statistics and statistical machine learning, including high-dimensional asymptotics (ridge regression, PCA), multiple testing, randomization tests, scalable statistical learning via random projections and distributed learning, uncertainty quantification for machine learning (calibration, prediction sets), robustness, fairness, and Covid-19 pooled testing via hypergraph factorization.”

For fundamental contributions to the development of privacy-preserving data analysis methodologies; for groundbreaking theoretical advancements in understanding gradient-based optimization methods; for outstanding contributions to high-dimensional statistics, including false discovery rate control and limits in sparsity estimation; for wide-ranging contributions to the theoretical foundation of deep learning.

The highest level of graduate student scholarship at UNC-Chapel Hill. Awarded to four doctoral
candidates or recent doctoral graduates each year for creating exceptional dissertations in each of the
following fields: biological and life sciences; humanities and fine arts; mathematics, physical sciences
and engineering; and social sciences.

Yearly award established to honor the best doctoral dissertation-based paper appearing in a prestigious biostatistical journal in that particular calendar year.
